The Snow Princess – Third Installment

This is the final installment of a three-part fairy story. See previous two posts for the full story. If you read this to a child, or even if you didn’t, I’d love your feedback!

So together, the Snow Princess, Mr. Kind-Heart and their rescuer set off for the Castle of the King of the North Country.  As they walked along, the Dazzling One told the story of his own father who loved everyone and had sent the rescuer to free folks from their prisons, just as he had done for the princess and her captor.   He assured Mr. Kind-Heart that he was now free to be kind and good to others.

When they drew near the North Country Castle, it was growing dark.  The Dazzling Prince said he must go to free other people in other places.  So he bid goodbye to his companions and disappeared in the dazzling light of a thousand stars.  th-3The Lavender Princess had been at her window, where she watched tirelessly, hoping her sister would return.  The bright light from the Dazzling One’s goodbye had caught her attention, and now she saw Princess Snow running toward the castle, her starry skirt twinkling as she ran.

Princess Lavender and the king rushed out to greet the Snow Princess.  Her father scooped her up into a great bear hug, laughing joyfully because she was home.  She told them how the stars had come to be scattered on her skirt.  They were amazed to meet Mr. Kind-Heart and learn that he was the former Mr. Cold-Heart, now transformed by the Dazzling Prince.

th-2The news quickly spread throughout the land that Princess Snow had returned and there was great rejoicing.  The King threw a huge party and people came from far and near to celebrate.  They heard the amazing stories of how the Snow Princess and Mr. Kind-Heart had each been freed.  But the Dazzling Prince was not there.  He was busy at the work his father had sent him to do.

Once the celebration ended, Mr. Kind-Heart began to accompany Princess Lavender and the Snow Princess as they traveled through the land of the North Country.  They continued to bring stew and flowers to people who needed cheer.  But now they also told the story of the Dazzling One who could free people and fill them with love.  In this way, they kept the king’s promise to honor throughout the kingdom the one who freed his daughter.

Folks liked to see the Snow Princess coming, because stars sparkled brightly on her dazzling white gown and they could see her from far away. th-7 In fact, many people began to call her Princess Snow Stars.  To her delight, her good friends simply called her “Star.”  Star was always happy now, because she finally had her own special nickname, just like Lacy.

And a funny thing happened in the North Country.  As Lacy and Star told Star’s story, and Mr. Kind-Heart told his, the North Country filled with love.   Each time the sisters told the story of the Dazzling Prince, they grew lovelier than they were before.  And the princesses, Mr. Kind-Heart, and the people of the North Country lived happily together in the land of sparkling winter snows, sweet lavender summers, and overflowing love.

The End.

I’d love to hear your comments!

    a wonderful story Carolyn – you should publish! I love the clear symbolism and how the story is told so beautifully that it leaves a picture that blesses- much more clearly than so many books for children (and adults) out there! I would love to see a picture of the real princesses (-;

  2. Thanks, Susanna! I would love to have had pictures of the girls in their costumes, but apparently no one took pictures. I even contacted the mom of the birthday girl and she couldn’t find pictures of that day either. I guess this one will have to stay in our imaginations!
